5 kitchen design tips

Designing your kitchen can be as daunting as it is exciting. WE ALL HAVE A VAGUE IDEA OF WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR, BUT THE FINAL EXECUTION IS CRITICAL. MAKING SURE YOUR KITCHEN IS AS FUNCTIONAL AS IT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING ISN’T ALWAYS AS EASY AS IT MAY SEEM. A KITCHEN DESIGNER CAN TAKE CAREOF THE FINAL DETAILS FOR YOU, BUT BEFORE GETTING TO THAT STAGE, WHY NOT TAKE A LOOK AT OUR 5 TOP TIPS FOR DESIGNING A GREAT KITCHEN.

1.    Storage:

Having enough storage in your kitchen is one of the most important aspects to get right. You don’t want a beautiful kitchen that ends up being cluttered with the things that you can’t fit into your cupboards.

This can be achieved by making use of all of the space within your kitchen. If you have high ceilings, you could think about adding top boxes, taking your units up to the ceiling. If you have an L shaped kitchen, you could add in swinging pull outs to gain functionality and movement with the cupboard. Add wire wear to any of your cupboards is a great way to make full use of the space.

2.    Colour:

With so many options available, choosing the right colour for your kitchen comes down to personal choice. However, it’s always a good idea to consider the amount of natural light you get in your room.
If your kitchen doesn’t get much natural light or is particularly small, we’d recommend considering a lighter colour scheme that will brighten up the room and make it appear bigger.
In contrast to this, if your room does receive a lot of natural light throughout the day, you may want to play around with a darker colour palette, warming up the room and avoiding a ‘washed out’ look.

3.    Texture:

Bringing texture into your kitchen can give the space a real sense of character. Depending on whether you’ve gone for a traditional or contemporary theme, bringing in an exposed brick wall or tiles can give the kitchen a truly unique look.

You also need to consider what type of floor will work best in your kitchen. Do you want a wooden floor to make the room warmer? Would you rather have tiles because they are less maintenance?

4.    Accessories:

Accessorising your kitchen allows you to bring your own personality into the room. Think about different types of handles and colours. If you have darker units, a gold handle will bring warmth into the room which can also be matched with your taps and sink.

This is also a great time to think about, if anything, what you would like on the walls. A vertical radiator can be a great feature in a kitchen, or will you have any art or photographs on the walls?

5.    Lighting:

As much as we encourage you to take advantage of the natural light in your kitchen, the artificial lighting you choose can also change the overall look of the room. If you have a particularly big, open plan kitchen diner, think about whether you would like to have all of the lights on at the same time, or if you’d prefer to be able to control different parts of the room individually. Will you include a feature light anywhere? Can you fit in any floor standing lamps to accessorise?
